Cottage Grove follows a young man and his estranged father reconnecting one night in Bronzeville, on the southside of Chicago. When Emmanuel, the protagonist, takes his stroke-affiliated father, Senior, and his girlfriend home from the hospital, a pit stop at a grocery store parking lot sparks an overdue convesation transcending language and reality. Set in the summertime, these men try to find common ground but don’t know how. Loosely inspired by an event with the director and his father. The film is about the unspoken issues in families, forgiveness, and the choices we make in life. Through halting words, meaningful looks, and flights of fantasy, a reconciliation between a father and son unfolds. Cottage Grove is for every black boy who needs their dad, every brown girl who wants mutual understanding with their mom, and every human being that desires an apology from their parent to heal.
